A marriage of heritage, music and dance at the Windybrow

Umshado.jpgFrom 27 January 2010, the Windybrow Centre for the Arts will erupt in a celebration of age-old African music and dance traditions linked to the marriage ceremony in Bogosi Bolokwe’s play Umshado.

Members_of_UMTYITYIMBO_DANCE_GROUP2.jpgCelebrating 10 years of change, diversity and a new name ARTSCAPE has planned a star studded evening of entertainment representing the rich cultures and performing arts of the Western Cape.  ‘ARTSCAPE 10’ is to be held in the newly refurnished Opera House on Sunday 8 November 2009 at 19:00. Booking is open for this spectacular event directed by Paul Warwick Griffin. Janine Neethling is the musical director and Richard Cock will conduct the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO).

   

HCI Foundation wins award for their support of the Baxter Theatre Centre

Mamma Mia the Mega Hit Musical hits SA in 2010

Mamma Mia International.jpgExperience the wonderful, irresistible story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs in the worldwide smash hit musical MAMMA MIA!  This enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship will premiere at the Artscape Opera House, in Cape Town on Sunday, 15 August 2010 for a limited season.  Thereafter the production moves to The Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg, opening on Tuesday, 05 October 2010. MAMMA MIA! is musical entertainment for the whole family with a broad appeal to audiences of all ages.
   

Theatre Festival under threat due to lack of funding

Joburg Promisica launches the Basement Theatre in Florida Park

Joburg Promusica proudly launched its new addition – The Basement, at a festive opening ceremony on 28 March 2009 at 19h00 in Florida Park, Roodepoort.

The African inspired Basement Theatre was officially opened by Zeona Motshabi, Chairperson of Joburg Promusica. A welcome address was also presented by Steven Sack, Director Arts, Culture and Heritage for the City of Joburg.
   

Wrap up of Time of the Writer Festival

Time of the Writer 2009 came to a rollicking conclusion on Saturday night with a sold-out session featuring straight-talking debate between Zapiro and Max du Preez. Entitled “I Write And Draw What I Like” – inspired by Steve Biko’s I Write What I Like – the central thread of the discussion was on freedom of expression in South Africa.

   

Beauty and the Beast scoops 12 Naledi nominations and extends for the final time

The hit musical Beauty and the Beast, produced in SA by Pieter Toerien and Hazel Feldman in association with Disney Theatrical productions, has wowed South African audiences since opening at the Teatro MonteCasino in Johannesburg in October 2008. The show opened at the Artscape Opera House in the Mother City in January this year, has received critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike and has now been extrended for the second and final time to 29 March 2009.



   

South African Tempest triumphs in the UK

The Baxter Theatre Centre and Royal Shakespeare Company’s collaborative production of William Shakespeare’s magical last play, The Tempest, is taking the UK by storm with five stars from several top theatre critics as well as other rave reviews, and the entire season is almost sold out.
