![]() Wednesday 25th Feb – 7pm – R80 – Zulu Jazz Lounge, Playhouse, Durban Josie Field & Shomon Two of South Africa’s most talented female artists at the stunning venue of Zulu Jazz Lounge! Zulu Jazz is situated on the side of the Playhouse building, 231 Smit street & features a full cocktail bar! Josie Field Biography:For the last four years Josie Field and her excellent band have been gigging their way into the hearts of thousands with honest and engaging performances featuring Josie’s original songs (including her hits Every Now & Then, 10 Years & Hey Man) as well as remarkable renditions of songs by wide range of influences from Billie Holiday, to Radiohead and System Of a Down. Last year, Josie shared the stage with James Blunt, Chris Chameleon, Arno Carstens, The Parlotones and Karen Zoid to name a few. These experiences proved an amazing, and hugely impactful event for the young star, and proved her capabilities and professional attitude towards her craft, amongst the industry and public who witnessed her near show-stealing performances on each occasion. Josie Field’s debut album, ‘Mercury’, released in 2006 has quietly gone on to sell over 7000 copies in S.A. alone. ‘Mercury’s first single, ‘Every Now And Then’, went to number 1 on 5 FM’s chart and was also at number 1 on listener-voted Hi5 @ 5 for 7 weeks. The second single of the same album, ‘10 Years’ went to number 2 on 5FM and stayed on the number 1 spot on the Hi 5 @ 5 for 3 weeks. Combined, these 2 singles, have achieved over 120 000 units in compilation sales and downloads. ‘Leyland’, released 8th September 2008, is a major leap forward, showing a more mature side to a young artist who has come into her own over the past 2 years. An older, more confident and braver Field is born, and many aspects of ‘Leyland’ unveil the determination and single-mindedness of a young artist destined for a great career in music. Josie Field has recently finished a music video for the second single from the album called “Law of Attraction” which is already a favourite choice on SABC 3 and DSTV. set to hit air waves and TV screens at the end of November 2008. Leyland is an album that has clearly blossomed from experiences of a growing artist. It’s a bizarre, symbiotic mix of folk, country, rap and pop, and in just 4 months since it’s release has already garnered major critical success and mainstream attention (it was included in The Star Tonight’s Top 10 albums of 2008). Josie Field & band will bring their Leyland set to Durban this month, in the form of four exclusive shows in and around Durban. The Johannesburg based singer-songwriter lists her dozen or so performances in Kwazulu Natal, over the last 4 years, amongst the highlights of her career so far - “I just love playing in Durban – in a way, I feel at home there – my mother’s side of the family are from KZN and I do feel rooted or grounded there – but what really makes it memorable is the awesome support we receive from our fans and music-lovers in Durban” www.josiefield.co.za Shomon Biography:Performing only her own original compositions is a brave move for anyone in the music industry. Her non-commercial, yet deeply moving lyrics and melodies have been described by the media and fellow musicians as meaningful, nourishing, igniting all the senses, unique, unpredictable, beautiful, necessary and magical. Shomon and music are synonymous – she doesn’t play the piano, her fingers make love to the keyboard, as she transports her audience into another dimension, usually with goosebumps! Her voice is Shomon’s most powerful instrument, transforming her from a gentle healing angel into a powerful and raunchy “rock chick” in the space of a few bars. Shomon’s lyrics reflect and reveal the reality of her own personal journey through life, with her observations, feelings and emotions laid bare, allowing her audience to recognise and embrace many things within themselves. It is not so much a performance, but rather an awesome experience, for both the artist and her audience. Building on and developing the gifts she was born with, Shomon studied Opera at Sahmyook University, Seoul, South Korea, and has recently spent a year at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA. “I have realised that my gift in life is my relationship with music and, after being coaxed into performing, it has been a rollercoaster ride of opportunities, performances, collaborations, blessings, abundance and self-discovery” Listen to her music at: www.myspace.com/goosebumpgirl or www.shomon.co.za Saturday 28th Feb – 3pm – R80 – Momoco’s, Botha’s Hill168 Old Main Road, Botha’s Hill, next to Pot & Kettle Josie Field & SETH This gig is taking place at our very first stunning Luna Lounge venue on the top of Botha’s Hill, overlooking the valley of 1000 hills. Seth also happens to be one of South Africa’s finest bands! SETH biographySeth is a four piece melodic rock band from Durban, South Africa. The band have been together from 2004 and matured into an exceptional live act since the release of their debut album. The current line up consists of Preston Ellapen (Vocals, guitar), Jesse Pillay (Lead guitar, backing vocals), Wayne Chetty (Bass guitar) and Brandon Marigadu (Drums). Seth’s remarkable sound is similar but not derivative to U2, Bryan Adams and Switchfoot. Seth’s sound has been compared to great bands like Three Doors Down (Barney Simon – GoTv; Tuks Fm, Radio 2000), Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls (Wicked Mike – Wicked Records) but the band personally reflects their music to the likes of U2, Bryan Adams, Switchfoot and at times Creed/Alterbridge. The band uses poignant lyrics embedded in well structured riffs and emotional choruses that challenge our choices and decisions into our own demise. In a nutshell Seth’s sound could be described has melodic, post-grunge, contemporary rock. ![]() Saturday 28th Feb – 3pm – R40 – Yossi’s Moroccan, Glenwood Shannon Hope & Shannon Connolly Also two stunning artists, Shan Hope’s music is strikingly similar to Shomon, Shan Hope & Shan Connolly have both played at splashy and white mountain! Shannon Hope biographyBorn from the innocent roots of a classical heart and flung into the realms of rock as the face of critically-acclaimed alternative rock band, Ketamine, singer-songwriter Shannon Hope has returned to the piano-based vocal illustration that defines her incandescent truth – powerful, honest and delicately moving in its artistry. Currently based in Durban, South Africa, her extensive musical journey over the past decade has seen her grace the stages of Splashy Fen, Woodstock, The White Mountain Folk Festival, The Barnyard Theatre and The Metro Theatre in Chicago, amongst others. Her much-anticipated debut solo album promises the heart-wrenching reflection of an artist yearning to be heard, and a voice impossible to ignore. ******************************************
What the world has said about Shannon Hope.. "Brooding and magnetic, it's hard not to be intrigued by singer-songwriter Shannon Hope. The established artist has had her share of success in the South African music industry and abroad, playing keyboards and singing in the rock band Ketamine, but nowadays she shows an altogether more vulnerable side as she launches her solo career." (Northglen News, September 2008)
“Hope is a powerful singer and when she opens you get the feeling you’re in for something special… talented and brave, her music makes you feel. Her set was powerful, strong, and she sings with such conviction that you know she’s not going anywhere for a while.” (Levis Music Mag, December 2008)
Shannon Connolly biographyDURBAN songstress Shannon Connolly is taking Durban by storm and is looking for new and exciting venues to showcase her unique brand of acoustic rock. The lady with the powerful vocals cut her teeth as one half of the acoustic duo Syrens in Pretoria, entering the competitive music scene at the tender age of 16. Syrens went on to share stages with big name SA bands like The Awakening, Matthew van der Want and Chris Letcher, Kaolin Thomson and Mr Barleycorn. In 2003, the girls had the opportunity to open for German electro-goth superstars, Diary of dreams on their SA tour and spent time recording with Jazzworx Studios in Joburg. After Syrens went their separate ways later that year, Shannon went to Europe where she tested the waters in London, busked the chilly streets of Galway, Ireland and spent two summers playing on a picturesque Greek island. Returning to her home town of Durban in 2006, Shannon immersed herself in the local music scene and began playing regularly with some of Durban’s finest at Café Rouge in Umhlanga, Thunder Road Rock Diner, Krakatoa and Zacks. She has since performed to enthusiastic crowds at the last two White Mountain Folk Festivals and has just started recording her debut solo album. Shannon has had a great year of experimenting with different sounds for her original material and the result is an eclectic blend of folk, blues, country and rock that will appeal to young and old ears. In the same way her cover songs run the gauntlet from the Beatles and KC and the Sunshine Band to Sublime and Foo Fighters- all performed with her own signature sound.
