Suidoosterfees at the Artscape Theatre (26 - 31 January)
Quality and quantity is the mark of this year’s Suidoosterfees. It is filled to the brim with audience favourites and well-loved Suidoosterfees artists. Whatever your language choice there are productions and events to keep you at the festival the entire day from 26 to 31 January 2010 at ARTSCAPE and includes music, dance, drama, film, art, books, discussions and a children’s book festival.
Brochures are available at Artscape Theatre Centre, Computicket outlets and details can be found on the festival website www.suidoosterfees.co.za. Ticket prices range according to the event and may be booked through Computicket, Artscape-dial-a-seat 021 421 7695 or on line www.computicket.com.
Look out for Vinette Ebrahim and Theodore Jantjies, Kaz McFadden in Vaselinetjie directed by Henry Mylne; David Kramer directs Krismis van Map Jacobs and presents his own Kaapse Breyani - a fullhouse hit in 2009; Neels van Jaarsveld in Bure oppie Bank; Terence Bridgett in All Soaped Up; Sandra Prinsloo in Die Naaimasjien - another fullhouse hit of 2009. Emile Minnie in Kaapse Karnaval will set the mood for the upcoming Cape Town Carnival in March; Gary Naidoo in a brand-new episode of Poespas entitled Sonspel; Francois Bloemhof in the Book Corner; the Wordwise Children’s festival; Denise Newman in the film Sexy Girls and our own opera diva, Virginia Davids, in Delicious Divas directed by Niël Rademan with lots of ‘Dainty’ surprises!
Successful young stars are amongst the line up, so make time for: six times Sama winner Lira; the Black Tie Ensemble, 7de Laan Christo Davids and Zane Meas; the Cape funky Irit Noble; the ever energetic Alistair Izobell; acclaimed Amanda Strydom and the festival artist who was honoured by the president, Peter Clarke.
The movie offering focuses on Distrik; the 13 hour-long documentary episodes are a unique combination of archive footage, interviews and music directed by the late great Taliep Pietersen.
The success of 2009’s cooking shows, Huiskok Glanskok Live! has prompted another presentation and this one is not to be missed. It is based on the book by the same name with famous chefs Francois Ferreira and Errieda du Toit. Also on the menu is an exhibition of food art photography by the book’s photographer and Chris Koch will offer you a delectable taste of whisky and chocolate with his festival circuit hit.
Visiting Cape Town, the festival is privileged to have a six-member ‘Kathak’ Dance Troupe from Pt. Arjun Mishra Kathak Academy who will give a free performance and workshop. The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit words katha meaning story, and katthaka meaning one who tells a story.
